Rovos Rail — Pride of Africa

Rovos Rail has developed the world’s most ambitious portfolio of African luxury-train journeys. The three-night Cape Town service is an accessible introduction, while routes to Victoria Falls, Namibia, Dar es Salaam and Angola turn the train into a base for serious overland exploration.

For the best route, cabin and date for your journey, email our luxury rail specialists with your preferred travel period and number of guests.

Signature geography

Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Namibia, Dar es Salaam and trans-African journeys

Why choose this train?

Classic African rail safari—with the details made clear.

The carriages favor polished timber, traditional fabrics and a slower, club-like atmosphere. The rear observation car’s open balcony is a signature pleasure. Longer journeys mix rail days with game drives, city tours, historic sites and occasional hotel stays. Because routes cross several national rail systems, flexibility is part of the experience and arrival times should never anchor a tight onward connection.

Cabins and suites

Accommodation varies materially by category. Our specialists compare floor space, bed configuration, private bathroom facilities, daytime seating and storage rather than relying only on the cabin name. We will explain the meaningful differences before you make a decision.

  • Pullman Suite
  • Deluxe Suite
  • Royal Suite

Dining and onboard life

Meals are served in dedicated restaurant cars and are generally paired with South African wines. Dinner is formal: a jacket and tie are expected for men, with cocktail or evening dress for women. Daytime clothing is smart casual, but safari sectors require neutral layers, sun protection and practical shoes.

Dining style, dress expectations and included beverages can differ by route or cabin. Ask us to confirm what applies to your chosen departure so the onboard experience meets your expectations.

  • One of the world’s broadest luxury-rail networks
  • Open-air observation balcony
  • Long-form trans-African expeditions
  • Formal dinners and attentive hosting

Practical planning

The Cape Town journey is published as three nights over approximately 1,600 km, with stops at Matjiesfontein and Kimberley. Long expeditions require careful visa, vaccination, insurance and luggage planning. Some border procedures and railway conditions are outside the operator’s control.

Accessibility and individual requirements

Historic carriages, narrow corridors, steps and off-train touring can restrict access. Ask for a written route-specific assessment, especially for long multi-country journeys.

Please share mobility, dietary, medical or celebration requirements at the inquiry stage. We will identify what can be requested and what must be confirmed before booking.

Best suited for

Travelers who want a true rail safari, from a short South African passage to a once-in-a-lifetime continental expedition.

If you are comparing this train with another exceptional journey, email us what matters most—privacy, scenery, culinary experience, culture, pace or cabin comfort—and we will help narrow the choice.
