Saphir Odoriko

Saphir Odoriko is an all-Green-Car daytime express linking the Tokyo area with the Izu Peninsula. Its appeal is a more considered transfer to coastal towns and hot-spring stays, with a choice between open seating, Premium Green and private compartments. The compartments are not sleeping suites. This is a premium rail journey that can anchor the beginning or end of an Izu break without becoming an overnight tour.

The journey in perspective

What makes Saphir Odoriko distinctive?

The useful decision is how you want to travel: open Green seating keeps the experience simple, Premium Green emphasises individual comfort, and a compartment creates a shared daytime space for a small group. The route gradually exchanges the metropolitan setting for the peninsula, making the transfer itself worth attention. Avoid judging the trip solely by photographs of one seat type, since the layouts differ substantially. Plan enough time at the destination to enjoy Izu independently; a comfortable train ride does not automatically include local transfers, hotel arrangements or sightseeing after arrival.

Seating, service levels and personal space

This is not an overnight sleeper service. Compare the exact seating or service class, dining arrangements and accessibility of the chosen carriage. Any hotel nights in a wider package are separate from accommodation aboard the train.

Green seats or a private daytime compartment for a group

Saphir Odoriko offers Green and Premium Green seating plus private Green compartments for four or six. These are daytime accommodations with no overnight bedrooms. A compartment provides group privacy, while Premium Green focuses on individual seated comfort; the two are different choices rather than interchangeable suite upgrades.

Decide whether the journey should feel like a quiet individual transfer or a shared occasion for companions. Check occupancy conditions and the actual seat layout before reserving a private room. Ask about boarding assistance and luggage if relevant. The Izu destination still needs its own hotel and local transport plan, and a premium train ticket does not include a resort stay or automatically arrange sightseeing after arrival.

  • No overnight bedrooms are provided.
  • Private compartments are daytime spaces for four or six.
  • Cafeteria purchases are separate from Green or Premium Green travel.

Ask us to compare the available categories and applicable offers for your dates. We will confirm the exact seating or sleeping arrangement in your proposal.

Food, dining and the daily rhythm

The cafeteria offers separately purchased light meals and drinks, with menus updated periodically. Check the current ordering or reservation arrangements before travelling, especially if you want a particular dish or dining time. A Green or Premium Green ticket should not be treated as an all-inclusive food-and-drink package.

If you want a particular dish or dining time, check the current ordering process rather than assume you can obtain it on boarding. A cafeteria visit can provide a useful break from the seat, but menus and availability change. Green and Premium Green describe accommodation, not unlimited food and drink. Plan any destination restaurant or hotel meal separately from the train's light-meal offering.

Tell us about dietary requirements when you inquire. Included beverages, special menus and the pace of off-train visits should be confirmed for the exact departure.

How to plan this journey well

Check whether your selected departure starts at Tokyo or Shinjuku and reserve the exact accommodation category. Private compartments have their own charging and occupancy rules, so compare the complete group cost rather than a single-seat headline. Confirm any rail-pass coverage and additional charges for the route and class, and organise luggage and onward Izu transport before departure.

Who will enjoy it most?

Couples, families and small groups travelling to Izu who want premium daytime comfort and a clear choice between individual seats and private shared space.

Accessibility and individual needs

Ask JR East for an assessment of station assistance, the appropriate seating category and accessible toilet arrangements. Private compartments or Premium Green may not be the most suitable choice for every mobility requirement; reserve according to confirmed needs.

Share mobility needs, luggage concerns and any important personal requirements before paying a deposit. We will request the relevant details; an inquiry is not a guarantee that a particular request can be accommodated.

Cities along the journey

Discover the places beyond the platform

Plan time for the city as well as the train. These guides suggest sights and local flavors for a separately arranged stay; they do not promise included excursions.

Japan

Tokyo

Tokyo is easier to enjoy when approached as a series of neighbourhoods, each with its own scale and character. Ueno offers parkland and museums, while Asakusa connects temple streets with a strong sense of the city's older entertainment and commercial life. These districts also illustrate why a short stay benefits from focus rather than constant cross-city movement. Rail travellers should make the departure station part of their hotel decision, then leave time for a chosen area. A quiet museum session, a neighbourhood meal and an evening walk can be more memorable than an exhausting list of landmarks.

A taste of the city. Tokyo's food range extends across Japan, but traditional districts such as Asakusa also preserve long-standing local dining customs. A modest noodle meal, carefully chosen sushi or an izakaya visit can each provide a different introduction. Around Ueno, railway-side dining offers another characteristic setting. Ask about broths and sauces when discussing dietary needs, and choose a few experiences that suit your appetite rather than making every meal a competitive search for a famous address.
